Expert Letter
Dear Experts,
We are a high school sophomore research group currently attending Kearny High Education Complex in the small school of SCT(Science, Connections, Technology) in San Diego, CA. My class is doing an Environment Project and our topic is based on toxins and chemicals in our food supply. We have some questions and it would be excellent if you could provide some insight.
My first question is, why are these toxins consumed in our everyday lives in The United States? Most consumers are young kids/teens that and are addicted to many types of unhealthy foods. Statistics show that kids consume about 100 to 150 grams of harmful toxins/additives a day. That is a lot and when we saw this, we were completely blown away. Is there a solution to reduce these toxins such as using different natural ingredients instead of these harmful toxins? These chemicals should be out of our food supply and not be fed to citizens of America and of the world.
We discovered that there are about more than 1800 chemicals, toxins, and additives used in our food supply. During our research, we were all shocked by this, including one of our teachers. During our research, we saw that these toxins/chemicals that are found in our food impacts our health. These deadly toxins can lead to cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. America is proven to be the second most obese country, with Mexico being the most obese. Is there any other alternative way for reducing obesity rates through getting rid of these toxins? If there is no solution for this, we worry that the obesity rate will rise and there would be a huge crisis.
Our final question relates to our possible solution. Most of these chemicals that are used in our food in the United States are banned from most foreign countries. Why are these chemicals banned at other foreign countries, but not here? Is there a reason that they are not banned? A solution we have is that companies should change these ingredients and make a safer and healthier choice instead of poisoning our people, and it would make a huge difference in our world.
During our group research we have learned much valuable information. The toxins and chemicals in our food supply should be replaced and we hope you can make this change with us. We would like to see a good and positive change that leads to a safer environment that protects the lives of our brothers and sisters. On behalf of my group and instructors from Kearny High, we wanted to thank you for reading this letter and we look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Samuel Tesfaldet, Yonas Tesfaldet, James Dang, and Alexis Palacios
